How to Paint a Deck – Loveland Colorado

Painting a deck may appear to be a tedious task due to the time it takes. Poor preparation and the use of wrong tools can even extend the time needed for the project. If a stain is used, then you need to refinish the deck every three to five years. However, if a paint is being used, you may need to redo the project yearly. Thus, it is crucial to find the quickest means of getting the project done. Plan to work when the humidity is less than 80%, the temperature lies between 40 and 90 degrees and when your project won’t be hindered by direct sunlight. Since you will need to make use of a paint sprayer, you need to work when there will be little wind.

Prepare the Deck
Preparing for the project is as important as the painting itself. Scrape off any peeling paint so that the new paint won’t peel off quickly. Also, repair the loose nails and pieces of woods.

Clean the Deck
Paints stick very well to clean surfaces. Thus, you need to get rid of all pollen, dust, dirt, and other debris from the surface of the deck by spraying it down with a deck cleaner before it is painted. Leave the cleaner on for 20 minutes and scrub the whole deck down with a stiff brush. Then, rinse the surface with clean water and let it dry.

Protect the Nearby Areas
Protect the surrounding areas, such as the side of the house, by applying plastic sheeting and securing it with painters tape. Also, plants and shrubs around the deck should be covered to protect them from the paint. Adhering to this step will save you time from having to remove deck paint from the side of your house and replacing dead plants.

Use a Sprayer
Sprayers help in painting the deck quickly. They can be loaded with any deck paint of your choice, and they help the paint to quickly cover the whole deck. Spray with the grain of the wood to achieve the best results. Smooth out any puddles and ensure that the paint gets into the nooks and crannies of the deck by using a long-handled roller brush and paint brush. Also, paint yourself off of the deck to prevent you from stepping on anything. Ensure each coat is thoroughly dried before applying the next coat. Protective gadgets like eye wear and mask should also be used when paint sprayers are used.
