Tips To Keep Your Furnace Clean – Loveland Colorado

When the cold winters arrive, we have no choice but to rely on our furnaces to keep us warm and comfortable. Waking up in the morning to an extremely cold house and broken furnace are the last things we want to worry about. Simple preventive maintenance will go a long way in keeping our furnaces running safely and efficiently for a long period of time.

Highlighted below are useful tips on how you can keep your furnace clean.

Clean Ducts To Prevent Clogs
Dust and dirt can accumulate in the furnace ducts. A high powered vacuum cleaner can be used to get rid of the dirt and dust in the ducts. The ducts should also be inspected to ensure they are properly sealed and connected. Damaged or leaking ducts should not be handled by you. Instead, allow a certified HVAC professional to inspect them.

The Filter Should Be Replaced Regularly
Filters need to be kept clean to prevent clogging. Clogged filters leads to malfunctioning filters. It is however quick and easy to fix filters. Always check the filter and ensure it is as clean as possible. A clogged filter should be replaced. Replacing furnace filters will help in getting rid of dust, dirt and debris from the furnace. This prevents incurring a high cost in maintaining the furnace when it breaks down.

Vacuum Out The Blower Assembly
The blower assembly is found next to the filter. Dust, dirt and debris usually settle in the blower assembly with time. These can lead to clogs and damage in the furnace. To prevent this, the blower assembly needs to be kept clean.

Before the commencement of the cleaning process, ensure the gas and power to the furnace are turned off. Then remove the panels that cover the filter. With the use of a vacuum, carefully remove the dirt that might have accumulated on the blower assembly. Once you’re finished, wipe it off with a damp cloth.

Then, check the fan components and its surroundings for any dust or dirt. Clean such dirt with vacuum and damp cloth. It is important to get rid of dirt and dust from the furnace as they are detrimental to its efficiency.

Ensure The Thermostat Is In Good Condition
The thermostat is that part of the furnace responsible for controlling the furnace. It is therefore important to keep it in good condition. A malfunctioning thermostat will affect the efficiency of a furnace. A good way to test the working condition of a thermostat is to adjust the temperature on the thermostat up and down, then listen to the furnace turn on and off.

Ducts are one of those things that I forget are there most of the time. I mean, I see the vents all over the place at work, but I forget that there’s a whole maze of duct work that goes all over the place behind the scenes. Cleaning them is something I definitely need to be better at, but I’m not sure I would know what to do if they were leaking. In that case, I’d probably have to call a professional. Thanks for the sound advice though.

I like the recommendation to clean the ducts to help prevent clogs or reduced air flow. I think it could be helpful in making sure the rooms can be heated or cooled as needed, as they wont be blocked off. It’s definitely something to keep in mind for my next furnace service. Thanks for the post!

i’m a new home owner and I keep learning about more things that I should be cleaning and maintaining. I think I would be more comfortable having a professional clean my ducts instead of trying to do it myself. Would once a year be frequent enough for this kind of maintenance? Also, is there a certain time of year when a cleaning will be most effective? Thanks for this helpful information!

I just got a new furnace and want to be sure that I keep it clean. Thanks for the advice about how you should change your filters regularly to prevent clogging. Another thing to consider is to get your furnace professionally repaired once a year.
